Jazz Nebula Code of Conduct
Jazz Nebula exists to bring the Calgary community together around the history, artistry, and joy of classic jazz and the American Songbook. That mission depends on every concert, rehearsal, meeting, and online space feeling welcoming, respectful, and safe — for audiences, musicians, volunteers, members, and board members alike. This Code of Conduct applies to everyone who takes part in Jazz Nebula activities, whether at a concert, a members’ event, a volunteer shift, a board meeting, or on our website and social media channels.
Our Commitment
We are committed to providing a positive, inclusive experience for all participants, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, or musical background or experience level. Everyone should feel free to enjoy and engage with the music without fear of harassment or discrimination.
Expected Behavior
We ask everyone involved with Jazz Nebula to:
- Treat performers, staff, volunteers, board members, and fellow attendees or members with courtesy and respect.
- Be considerate of others’ experience of the music — this includes arriving on time where possible, silencing phones during performances, and keeping conversation to appropriate moments.
- Follow the direction of venue staff, ushers, and Jazz Nebula volunteers regarding seating, safety, and house rules.
- Respect the artistic and historical work behind each performance, including any restrictions on photography, video, or audio recording announced at an event.
- Engage in good faith and with honesty in all Jazz Nebula business, whether as a member, volunteer, donor, or board member.
- Respect the privacy and confidentiality of other members, volunteers, and board discussions where applicable.
Unacceptable Behavior
The following will not be tolerated at any Jazz Nebula concert, event, meeting, or online space:
- Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form, including based on the characteristics listed above.
- Verbal abuse, threats, or unwelcome physical contact directed at performers, staff, volunteers, or other attendees.
- Disruptive behavior that interferes with a performance or event, including sustained loud talking, flash photography during performances, or unauthorized recording.
- Attending or participating while impaired in a way that creates a safety risk to oneself or others.
- Misrepresentation of Jazz Nebula, its board, or its members in public statements or on social media.
- Retaliation against anyone who reports a concern in good faith.
Reporting a Concern
Anyone who experiences or witnesses behavior that violates this Code of Conduct is encouraged to report it as soon as possible to a Jazz Nebula volunteer or board member on site, or by contacting the board through the “Contact” or “Members” section of jazznebula.com. Reports will be handled promptly and as discreetly as circumstances allow.
Enforcement
Jazz Nebula’s Board of Directors is responsible for enforcing this Code of Conduct. Depending on the nature and severity of the behavior, responses may include a verbal warning, removal from a concert or event without refund, suspension or termination of membership or volunteer status, or referral to venue security or local authorities. The board’s decision on any enforcement action is final.
